Neurofeedback

One of the types of therapy we offer at Insight Services is a computer-based model called Neurofeedback.

Called Neuro for short, this modality is a popular therapy among our clients. Sessions run about 40-45 minutes and require no traditional “talk therapy.” In other words, you do not have to talk about a problem for Neuro to be able to help you with it.

In a session, your therapist will use feedback from electrodes “stuck” to your head to monitor your brainwave activity.

Neuro measures for overactive or underactive brain waves, which are signs of symptoms of imbalance in your brain.

Neuro is used for two main purposes. One, to calm down the functioning of the brain. This leads to clients having fewer reactions to stress and remaining calmer and more focused during stressful times. The brain becomes more stable, flexible, and stronger when faced with pressure. In turn, this leads to better sleep, fewer headaches, and a brain that is able to “shut off” when you want or need it to do so. For example, when you are at home with your family and want to be present, or when you are trying to sleep or relax.

The second purpose Neuro has is as a special kind of trauma therapy called the Alpha-Theta protocol. Neuro is an excellent type of trauma therapy for many clients because it never requires clients to talk about, or even think about traumatic events.

For most clients, these memories can be retrieved and sorted out by the brain without the person ever having to be aware of what their brain is processing. This protocol has been effective in assisting individuals with an inability to verbalize their trauma without triggering severe effects in their process or as an adjunct therapy to individuals with complex trauma.

When it feels disheartening to learn that trauma changes the brain, remember that healing changes the brain too.
