Specialized Services
for First Responders
Mental Health for First Responders
We are a group of practitioners trained in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse services through individual, couples, family and group therapies for adolescent and adult clients, ages 13 plus. Our clinicians are trained trauma providers, and several hold specializations in PTSD and trauma-specific modalities, such as EMDR, TF-CBT, neurofeedback, DBT and trauma-informed yoga. Additionally, we are providers who are experienced and understanding of the distinctive trials for emergency responders and their families.
We are all too familiar with how the training that makes you good at what you do, and keeps you safe, does not always allow for healthy processing of the tragedy and trauma experienced in your work. We also understand that maintaining the ability to shut down your emotions at work, and then remain emotionally healthy and connected with the important people in your life, is challenging. We see it is not just you who is affected by the work you do, but so are the members of your family. We can additionally provide resources to help your family members to become more resilient in dealing with the secondary trauma they often experience as an emergency responder family. We are honored to be a provider for emergency responders, and would be happy to help support you and/or your families.
First Responders – Addiction Specific
One of the specialties we offer at Insight Services is help with alcohol or drug abuse. In particular, we specialize in therapy for people who are misusing drugs and alcohol because they are also battling issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. We understand many people struggle to cope with life stressors, and it is not uncommon for people to turn to substances seeking relief. We also recognize that you as emergency responders are constantly exposed to greater strain than most people. And while these heroic duties are critical to our society, we likewise know they can be exhausting and emotionally draining. The constant exposure to destruction, life-threatening situations, and the physical strain of working long hours under stressful conditions can greatly harm overall mental health. In this sense, it is not surprising that there is often a close relationship between addiction and emergency responders.
It is estimated that 30% of emergency responders will struggle with mental health concerns during their time of service, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Despite the wreckage untreated trauma and stress can cause, clearly there has been an undeniable stigma in emergency responder culture about getting help. Fear of being seen as weak or not up to the job can keep many from seeking help and can lead suffering people to turn to alcohol and drugs as a means of relief. Luckily, many peer support programs are working to end the stigma of asking for help, and we can offer you a supportive environment where you can seek aid without fear of being shamed, or losing your job because you are trying to deal with this problem.
When a person turns to alcohol or drugs to try to cope, they are more likely to become reliant on drugs and alcohol than someone who is a recreational user. In fact, it is believed that half of all people who struggle with their mental health will also become reliant on drugs and alcohol. Due to severe stress and trauma, it’s common for emergency responders to develop this pattern. Sadly, emergency responders are at a higher risk of drug abuse than the general population, and they are at a significantly higher risk of alcohol abuse.
If you are concerned about your alcohol or drug use, feel like you might be becoming reliant on substances to cope with work stress, or just have questions, we are available for support.
