Clinical Director/Owner, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Addictions Counselor, EMDR II trained

Joanie brings her leadership and management skills gained through working in the business sector since 1990 and couples it with her work as a counselor since 1997, to lead the Insight Services team. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Colorado College and a master’s Degree in Psychology from Regis University. Joanie is dually credentialed as a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Addiction Counselor, and has spent her counseling career developing comprehensive treatment modalities for the treatment of co-occurring disorders. She is a Level II EMDR trained clinician, providing more depth of resources in addressing individuals with life challenges. In addition to being a small-business owner Joanie is very involved with her community in Colorado Springs. She volunteers her time for non-profit organizations because she believes in giving back to her community, and enjoys spending time with her family, biking, and camping.

Liz grew up in a bicultural military family; this experience gave her the opportunity and motivation to live in many different places, meet a lot of different kinds of folks, and work with many unique populations. A naturally curious person, Liz is a therapist who really feels like this work is her life’s purpose. Liz graduated in 2004 from The University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and in 2006, earned a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. She holds three licenses, is trauma informed, and LGBTQ+ affirming. Liz started as a Marriage and Family Therapist trainee in Los Angeles in 2004. During her career so far, she has enjoyed working with emergency responders, active duty and veterans, people in recovery, incarcerated people, families and adolescents, and LGBTQ+ folks. She’s held positions in schools, jails, juvenile hall, residential treatment, group homes, community-based care, and outpatient settings. Through these experiences, she has fine-tuned a passion for helping people in challenging circumstances get “unstuck,” and supporting clients to become their best selves. Liz is stylistically direct, passionate about her work, and honored to participate in the sacred process of helping people heal.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Addictions Counselor, Board Certified Neurofeedback, Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher

Lorri has more than 16 years of experience working in the behavioral health field. She has extensive training in the use of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness for the treatment of addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, and compulsive disorders. She earned a master’s degree from Newman University and was an adjunct professor for the program. She is board certified in Neurofeedback (under supervision of Dr. J. Blair Cano, PsyD, MSCP, Licensed Psychologist). She is also a Level II Ambassador for Yoga for First Responders, as well as a certified facilitator for Eat, Breathe, Thrive, Veteran’s Yoga Project, Mindful Yoga Therapy, Yoga and the 12 Steps of Recovery, and Myofascial Tissue Release Level I & II. Her practical, holistic approach weaves in tenets of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic-based interventions, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

Mark began his second career as a substance use counselor in 2012 after spending more than 20 years in the engineering field. He worked in manufacturing, research and development, and failure analysis where he used his love of chemistry and physics to help solve complicated problems and provide real world solutions. Today, Mark uses that same approach in counseling—identify a problem and use all tools available to find a realistic workable solution. He is a Certified Addictions Specialist, Registered Yoga teacher, Space Holder Yoga and the 12 Steps of Recovery, AcuDetox Specialist and Neurofeedback technician (under supervision of Dr. J. Blair Cano, PsyD, MSCP, Licensed Psychologist). He employs Neurofeedback training to help individuals manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma and other serious concerns. He presently works with the Recovery Court program in both group and individual settings incorporating Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and numerous other relapse prevention and recovery models to give his clients the tools needed for an improved and healthier life. He is an active wood and stone carver and enjoys hiking, fly fishing and spending time with his perfect dogs.

Sarah graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in 2017, and in 2019, earned a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with an emphasis in addictions from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Sarah is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Addictions Counselor who specializes in working with Domestic Violence Survivors and co-occurring disorders of substance use and mental health diagnoses, primarily working with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and borderline personality disorder. Sarah’s passion lies in working with individuals who seek to facilitate healthy relationships in their lives or are working to maneuver or heal from relationships which have caused pain and confusion. In addition, she has passion for helping those who are struggling with addiction, providing a nonjudgmental and compassionate space for clients to feel safe and create sober-positive lives supportive of recovery. Her theoretical approach is integrative and one versed in interventions of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Narrative Therapy.

 Laura graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, and a master’s degree in counseling and human services from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. As a Licensed Professional and Addictions Counselor, Laura has devoted her 29-year career to assisting individuals identify their potential and build a foundation for betterment and change. She has worked in a variety of settings including public health, juvenile detention facilities, and problem-solving recovery courts. After 24 years in private practice, Laura was thrilled to become a part of the Insight team of outstanding clinicians. She is a Level II EMDR trained clinician, and her no-nonsense approach assists clients in reaching their goals in a genuine and focused manner. She is a Colorado Springs native and proud to give back to her community through therapeutic means.

 Michael D. Maxey earned his BA from the University of Northern Colorado in 1988 and completed his master’s degree at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992. With more than 30 years in the mental health field, Michael is passionate about supporting individuals with complex mental health needs since 1986. From February 1999 to August 2015, Michael served as the Director of the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) in Gulfport, Mississippi. As the first crisis center in the state, the CSU achieved a diversion rate of over 87%, helping countless individuals access critical support while reducing unnecessary hospitalizations. In his role, Michael collaborated with families, community leaders, and law enforcement to create a compassionate and effective care model. His work was instrumental in the growth of CSU facilities across Mississippi, which now include over 23 units serving the state’s 82 counties.

In 2016, Michael returned to Colorado, and he joined the Insight team in October 2024. He is honored to be part of a skilled, diverse team dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the lives of their clients and community.

Broderick is a passionate and dedicated counselor and social worker with over ten years of experience. He was raised in Harlem, New York, and after graduating with a degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California in 2018, Broderick committed to empowering individuals and communities through advocacy, support, and guidance. Drawing from both personal experiences and a strong educational foundation, Broderick has worked to address social challenges with empathy and an unwavering commitment to positive change. He works to blend practical knowledge and a deep understanding of the importance of community to improve lives, advocate for underserved populations, and create lasting solutions to systemic issues while reducing the stigma around mental health and addiction. Broderick utilizes a compassionate, client-centered approach as well as modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy to create a safe space for clients to explore their emotions, develop coping strategies, and build a healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Betty Smith, Practice Manager

Betty is a long-time resident of Colorado Springs with more than 20 years of managerial experience. She has an extensive background in customer service and collections in the banking industry with a Fortune 500 company. She is responsible for coaching all staff members on the implementation of Insight Services Policies and Procedures. She manages daily office operations in supervision of the administrative team and manages our billing department while maintaining a professional and nurturing clinical environment conducive to Insight Services clientele.
