Trauma Recovery

Most people associate trauma with posttraumatic stress (PTSD) disorder among veterans who were exposed to combat situations. Yet, trauma can happen to anyone and is a very complicated kind of harm that can result from a wide variety of events or circumstances. There are three types of trauma: acute, chronic and complex.

  • Acute trauma results from a single event (single assault, accident, natural disaster).
  • Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged (chronic abuse, neglect).
  • Complex trauma is exposure to a varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature (prolonged exposure to traumatic events, multiple experiences of trauma from different events or circumstances).

Trauma activates an alarm or alert system in the brain and our memory systems are overwhelmed with intense stimulation and the disrupts the body’s ability to return to a restful state. Symptoms may include problems in concentration or memory, psychological distress (worsening of underlying or other mental health issues), physiological distress (worsening of underlying or existing chronic physical conditions), relationship challenges, or social withdrawal. One experiences emotional dysregulation including fear, sadness, inability feeling positive emotions, nervousness, hypervigilance, or irritability.

These symptoms can improve over time without intervention, although some people experience lingering, intense effects that interfere with their day-to-day lives that do not go away on their own.

Insight Services provides trauma-informed care and specialized treatment interventions for addressing pervasive trauma-related issues to include Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma-Sensitive Yoga, Neurofeedback, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
